A New Direction…

Hey, everybody! First off, if you’re new to my blog, I want to say thanks for being here and for spending your precious time reading my work. Wellness is a central part of my life, and I love being able to create content to share with all of you. I hope that you leave feeling inspired, motivated, and a little more creative!

If, however, you’ve been reading for a bit longer, you’ll know that up until now I have focused my writing largely on general yoga, Reiki, and wellness topics. While I still believe that the explorations we’ve had together up to this point are insanely important in getting started on your wellness journey, I started to realize that I have a specific group of people in mind as I’m writing: those of us who’ve experienced mental illness in some way. Whether you struggle currently or have in the past (or even if you’re familiar with the fight through someone close to you rather than yourself), I want you to know that I am right there with you!

It’s much too long of a story to tell in my post today and to be quite honest, I’m not sure if I’m ready for the internet to hear such intimate details yet. However, I started yoga in 2014 as a way to cope with my anxiety and depression. It wasn’t to gain physical strength or lose weight and I definitely didn’t have any aspirations of putting my legs behind my head; all I wanted was a practice that I could turn to when I was feeling low, something that I could use to connect with myself and face the hard things that I’d spent so long resenting. And oh boy, did I find it.

I still take antidepressants. I have a prescription for those times when the anxiety becomes too much and I just can’t handle it on my own. I used to feel guilty about those things because we yogis like to be “all natural”. However, I have realized that there is nothing more yogic than learning to care for yourself and listen to what your body is telling you. Sure, I take medication, but I also sink into Child’s Pose or lift up into a headstand when things get rough. I have made peace with where I am. It’s okay! I want every single person out there who also struggles with these issues to also know that it’s okay. And if it doesn’t feel like it right now, please know that there is hope and it will get better. I am living proof! Yoga is an incredible practice, and holistic living in general has done wonders for my mental health. I believe with every single fiber of my being that it can do the same for you.

So that’s why I’m here. That’s the direction this blog is going, and I’m so, so, so excited to share my own journey with all of you and to support you in whatever struggles you’re facing. I want this to be an open and supportive place where you can come to be real with yourself and others about the stuff you’re facing. If there’s ever anything you’d like to discuss, any questions you’re mulling over, or any ideas you have for me, please feel free to let me know. I am all ears. Let’s do this!

    1. Thank you for taking the time to read! I would like to share my whole journey at some point so that other people can glean some hope from it, but it’s a little nerve-wracking to do on the Internet! I’ll get there. 😉
